Live has been a major part of the infrastructure at Glastonbury Festival for over 40 years. Our installation is an essential component of the operating licence and ensures one of the greatest shows on Earth can happen.

As the largest open-air music and performing arts festival in the world, Glastonbury works in partnership with Live to ensure the site is as accessible as possible and all visitors can move safely in and around the festival.
Innovation to secure the future of the Festival
To help ensure the future of Glastonbury Festival, by stopping illegal entry into the festival and providing a safe environment for legitimate festival goers, in 2002 Eve and Glastonbury Festival engineers worked in partnership to design and develop the formidable Super Fortress Fence - a real solution to control the huge site.
Standing at 4.12m high and 7.8km long, the fence has unique high security features including an attached external roadway to prevent tunnelling, 45 degree overhangs to prevent climbing, and zero nuts and bolts preventing the fence from being tampered with.
Live now provides more than 8,000 metres of Super Fortress Fence around the perimeter of the site, together with the same 8km of interior mesh fence. The fence has become an icon of the festival, adorned with artworks by 'Banksy' and is almost as recognisable as the Pyramid Stage as a symbol of the post-millennium Glastonbury.
As well as the Super Fortress Fence,we also supply the festival with almost 20km of Temporary Roadways, 14km of additional Fencing, eight Bridges, Crowd Control Barriers and Pedestrian Walkways to make sure the organisers, contractors, security and, most importantly, festival goers can move around the site safely.
Saving costs and working collaboratively
Owing to the enormity of the project, Live’s team works very closely with the event organisers from start to finish to ensure the temporary infrastructure is constructed on time and to exacting standards.
The immense project involves a team of 25 Live staff working on-site (with 16 regularly sleeping onsite too) for 13 weeks. This amounts to over 25,000 man-hours in total to complete, involving transportation, installation and recovery.
Due to the huge quantity of access products required for the event, the logistical operations are on an extremely large scale with approximately 400 articulated lorry movements between the site and Live’s central Service Centre over the 13-week project period.
Live prides itself on its innovative approach to complex projects like Glastonbury. The Glastonbury Festival is the largest event contract with a wide range of access products being used and requires in-depth planning and project management. All staff who have been involved with Glastonbury over the years have worked tirelessly to ensure the success of the Festival and this has enabled us to return year on year.
“Live’s Super Fortress Fence has inspired and enthused a global audience and helped to secure Glastonbury Festival a 10-year licence. When the fence goes up, the festival build begins, and Live has played a big part in its continuing success. Live is high up the priority list at Glastonbury. We use Trakway across the greenfield site and it sews everything together, for the build and the out as well. Live is always a very good team that hits its considerable targets ahead of the deadline.”
