Delicate Beach Access for Eco-Sensitive Coastline

With our experience in SSSI access (Sites of special scientific interest) we were a firm choice for providing beach access without the risk of any direct human contact with the fragile coastal environment.

Lion Panel

In order to survey and retrieve scientific samples from two sites on the Lincolnshire coast, we designed a solution to provide vehicle and personnel access over the delicate salt marshes for a drilling rig and to allow samples of geotechnical and geophysical data to be taken.

Because of the sensitive nature of the site, LION’s installation lorries were far too heavy for the delicate marshes, so we supplied lighter, rubber-tracked vehicles to displace their weight more evenly across the beach access.

We deployed a geotextile substrate between the ground and the trakway and with an on-site ecologist who guided us around sensitive areas, we ‘leap-frogged’ a plastic walkway either side of the installation to allow us to progressed across the marsh and avoid anyone walking anywhere that could become contaminated.

Because of tidal flow, to prevent any movement of the roadways, LION secured them with ground pins and steel ropes and to continue the roadway across tidal creeks, we spanned these by installing multiple bridge ramps.

Where there were ruts in the ground, we deployed sandbags which were commissioned specifically filled with Lincolnshire coastal sand so that on removal of the roadways, the sand bags were opened and the sand left in the ruts to aid redevelopment and reinstatement of the ground.
